"Nursing" Doctor Denied

We were on our doctor's office this afternoon and I was reading some articles on a magazine and this one caught my attention. Why? Because it is about a "nursing" mother who filed a lawsuit to National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) for not allowing her an extra hour to express her milk for her child.

Here is the story:

Sophie Currier made headlines when she sued the NBME for repeatedly refusing her request for extra time to express milk during her nine hours licensing exam. Currier, who had planned to begin her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, filed a lawsuit requesting a court order for an additional hour to pump (on top of the usual 45 minutes of break time) - a suit she originally lost but won on appeal. Currier calls it "a victory for all women who believe that they can successfully balance careers and be the best possible mother. '

Still, the NBME is appealing the decision. "We understand the needs of breastfeeding mothers...may make the exam day particularly challenging, but the high stakes involved in assessing competence of aspiring physicians to practice medicine require that we maintain rigorous and consistent standards," says spokesperson Ruth Hoppe, M.D.

Do you think the NBME's stand make you mad? (for those nursing mother ). I believe that it totally depends on one's point of view when it comes to situation like this. I nurse my daughter and it's really a challenge compare to mother that are not breastfeeding.

  1. There's actually a lot more to this story that isn't being told. First..I want to say I am all for women breast feeding..my wife breast fed both of our kids.

However, this situation is different. This woman already failed her boards once. She was pregnant at the time with the child she has now. She took the test a second time and wanted to have "extra" time to be able to express milk. She failed the test a second time and then took on this campaign. The test lasts 9 hours. They get 45 minutes in breaks. So, if she was wise, she gets a 15 minute break every 3 hours. However, if she finishes a section before time is up, she gets that extra time as well. I get the whole "engorged" and pain thing..but, expressing every 3 hours is acceptable. It has never taken my wife more than 15 minutes to express one bottle. This woman is just trying to rationalize her failures and she's using this as an excuse.

  3. Currier went to the Boston press months before she sued the medical board. In June, she told the Boston Globe was going to ask the board for 20 minutes of extra break time. You mean she hadn’t asked before she went to the Globe?

The negative public commentary to the news articles and to her own blog seemed to backfire instead of the negative media coverage pressuring the board into giving her what she wanted. Undaunted, she found a pro bono attorney and by the time she sued in September, the ante was up to 60 minutes of extra break time. Perhaps suing over a paltry extra 20 minutes, time that could come from the double testing time, would look frivolous so she claimed all kinds of horrible things would happen to her breasts and demanded 60 minutes of extra breaks, 3 times the original claim. Has Sophie got a credibility problem? You be the judge.
