An Australian man and his daughter went public about an incestous relationship after having a baby together.
John Deaves, 61, and his daughter Jenny, 39, have a 9-month-old daughter and have been banned from having sex after the court had convicted them on two counts of incest, placing them both on a 3 year good behavior bond.
The case provoked international media attention when they appear on the Australia's 60 minutes program to explain their relationship which apparently began after they were re-united.
John Deaves, left the family when Jenny was 1 year old and did not see his daughter until she was 30. She was married that time and had 2 kids when she first met her father but within weeks of re uniting, they started having sexual relationship.
"...We're normal intellectual adults who have had careers, had a normal life like everybody else but fallen in love with each other when we are biologically related, when we've discovered each other later in life..." Jenny Deaves told the Nine network.
"...Emotions take over, as people no doubt realise, there are times during your life where emotions do rule the heart, it rules the head...I knew it was illegal, of course I knew it was illegal but you know, so what..." John Deaves said.
According to Steven Millsteed, the District Judge, the case was not typical because although father and daughter, the pair were “virtually strangers” when their relationship commenced.
"...This is not a case where a father has violated his daughter and used his position of authority to take advantage of her powerlessness,” Millsteed said.
Judge Steven Millsteed also said he took account of the high risk of congenital defects for children born from incestuous relationships, and the psychological harm to the children, when he sentenced the couple.
