So here are a few tips from Alice Henneman from the University of Nebraska Extension on how we can stretch that food dollar.
- Keep a grocery list. Gas for an extra trip to the grocery store easily can add a dollar or more to your grocery bill. And the less you shop, the less likely you will make an impulse purchase. Keep your grocery list where it is easily found such as on your fridge and remember to take them.
- Garbage Check. We lose money anytime we toss food because it spoiled before we got around to eating it. If leftovers are thrown away because they are left too long in the fridge, we are putting money in the trash can. Make a plan to avoid tossing food. If extra mashed potatoes get thrown away because they stayed too long in the fridge, make less next time. If you think that you made too much you can freeze some of them in this way, it stays a longer. But do remember to eat them up.
- Avoid Shopping When Hungry. Me and my husband always fall for this one. Most of the time we shop before we eat and we end up buying a whole bunch of snacks. This is a classic rule of grocery shopping since everything looks good an empty stomach. It's also too easy to buy something to snack until we make it home. And when kids are with you when shopping make sure that they have a meal or snack before shopping.
