Cultural Lag...

Cultural Lag - this means that not all parts of a culture change at the same pace. When some parts of the culture changes, other parts are lag behind.

A striking example of this is our nice-month school year. Have you ever wondered why it is nine months long and why we take summers off? For most of us this is "just the way it's always been," and we have never questioned it. But there is more to this custom than meets the eye, for it is an example of cultural lag.

In the late 1800's, when universal schooling came about, the school year matched the technology of the time, which was labor intensive. Most parents were farmers, and for survival they needed their childrens help at the crucial times of planting and harvesting. Today, generations later, when few people farm and there is no need for the school year to be so short, we still live with this cultural lag.

Genetics Basics

Have you ever wondered why you have the same eye color as your mother or the same hair color as your father? Genetics is the study of heredity or inheritance. Genetics helps to explain how traits are passed from parents to their young. Parents pass traits to their young through gene transmission. Genes are located on chromosomes and consist of DNA. They contain specific instructions for protein synthesis.

Cause and Effect, A Definition Essay

Most children spend a great amount of time watching television before they enter school. Of course television in moderation can be a good thing. Preschoolers can get help learning the alphabet, those in grade school can learn about animals and parents can keep up with the current news. TV can be an excellent entertainer and educator. But despite the advantages too much television can cause a lot of problem. Research shows that children who spend more than 4 hours of watching television are more likely to be overweight. Kids who see violent programs are more than likely to believe that the world is scary and something bad will happen to them. TV is full of programs that show risky behaviors such as sex and substance abuse as fun and being cool. For these reasons that I have mentioned, parents must teach their children good TV habits by setting a good example.

Classification Essay, An Example

Psychological disorder is something that is deviant, distressful and has dysfunctional behavior patterns. It is being viewed as persistently harmful thoughts, feelings, and actions. Standards for uncommon behavior vary from culture to culture. In some cultures, people routinely behave in ways that in other cultures would be considered abnormalities. There are different types of psychological disorder. To name a few: ADHD, also known as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Anxiety disorder, Dissociative disorder, Mood disorders, Schizophrenia and Personality disorder. These disorders are then classified into subtypes to further illustrate.

Adultery, not a crime in the state of Texas.

Adultery - is define as an act of betrayal against a spouse.

Do you know what adultery is not a crime in the state of Texas?

When I first heard of it, I was shocked. I cannot believe that adultery is not a crime. Adultery is not illegal in the sense that it is not a crime against the laws of the State of Texas. Neither you nor your spouse goes to jail because one of you had an extramarital affair.

Now there's something that we can think about. I think the state of Texas, need to look this over.

Red Dot on Your Forehead

"The red dot on a Hindu woman's forehead is nothing more than an indication of her marital status. Many believe that the dot is an Indian tradition, rather than a Hindu." This belief is a myth.

The red dot is a tradition of Hindu. A lot of people are confused between the terms Hindu and Indian. Although majority of Indian people are Hindu, there are also other religions.

The custom is for unmarried women to wear black marks, married women to wear red. Red is the traditional color. Usually Hindu women wear the color that matches their Saris or outfit and according to their likes and tastes. Men wear it on festive occassion such as ritual worship (Puja), marriage or waving of lights (Arati) or while upon return from voyage or campaigns. The dot on the forhead is not always red not it is always a dot. It also goes by different names. "Bindi" is one of the famous names that I've heard of. Hindu's also calling the dot "Tilaka", "Kumkum", "Bottu" or simply a "red dot."

Today, the little red dot has evolved into different colors and ornamental decorations. Celebrities also sometime use the red dot as a style statement or a cosmetic mark used to enhance beauty.

The position of the dot is simple and standard: middle of the forehead. In the Hindu tradition they believe that all people have three etes. The two outer ones used for seeing the outside world, and the third one which focus towards God. What it truly represents is the third eye of spiritual site. The red dot denotes piety and a continous reminder to always remember God.

Avoid Post-Partum Depression

Postpartum depression is a bane for many women with some high-risk populations reporting 40 to 50 percent of new mothers at risk for the disorder. New research suggests breast feeding and the good fats in Omega-3 fatty acids help new moms fight depression.

However, the depression reducing effects of breast feeding occur only if the experience is not a stressful event.

“Depression in new mothers is common in many cultures, affecting anywhere from 10 percent to 20 percent of postpartum women. In some high-risk populations, the percentage can even be as high as 40 percent or 50 percent.

Since depression has devastating effects on both mother and baby, it’s vital that it be identified and treated promptly. Depressed mothers are also more likely to stop breastfeeding with negative health effects for each,” said lead author Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, a University of New Hampshire researcher.

According to Kendall-Tackett, physical and psychological stressors increase inflammation, which is one of the top contributors to depression in new mothers. Most current treatments for depression, including the long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, are anti-inflammatory.
New mothers experience an increase in inflammation because of increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines. These levels dramatically increase in the last trimester of pregnancy and continue to elevate during the postpartum period.

Moreover, common experiences of new motherhood, such as sleep disturbance, postpartum pain, and past or current psychological trauma, act as stressors that cause proinflammatory cytokine levels to rise, according to Kendall-Tackett.

“Breastfeeding protects maternal mood by lowering stress. When stress levels are lower, the mother’s inflammatory response system will not be activated, thereby lowering her risk of depression,” she said.

“However positive these results, I must issue one caveat: they only apply when breastfeeding is going well. As noted earlier, when breastfeeding that is not going well, particularly if there is pain, it becomes a trigger to depression rather than something that lessens the risk. Mothers’ mental health is yet another reason to intervene quickly when breastfeeding difficulties arise.”

On being pregnant and first time mother

Pregnant....scary... uncomfortable...a lot of stuff are going on inside my head... lots of mood swings.. sometimes I think I'm going crazy... there are times I feel so bored that I dont know what to do... always exhausted... these are just some of the stuff that I am experiencing with my pregnancy and being a first time mother...or rather soon to be mom... On my first trimester everything was a mess... I been in and out of the hospital due to the reason that the food I'm taking will not go into my system... even water will not stay down... I've come to a point that I'm so scared to even eat.. because I was so scared that I will throw up all of the food again... Im on my second trimester now.. i dont have lots of nausea but Im still scared sometimes... If there is such a thing as pre partum depression, I think I am having it. My second trimested is almost over, now that my 3rd trimester is getting near, I am getting more scared for the delivery and for the welfare of my baby, and what will happen... I'm anxious for it to go out... because right now it is very uncomfortable... I know I'll get over of this anxiousness and the scary part... but as my delivery is getting near it feels like its not going to end. I just hope that delivery will be okay, baby will be okay... and I hope I could be a good mother...

First Ten Minutes for my English 1301

English 1301 was the first class that I had for the night. After the previous class was done using our room, we went inside the classroom. Students started looking for places to sit. I sat in the middle of the room so I could have a good view during the lecture. As we waited for our instructor, I was thinking "Here I am again back in school. Will I be able to do well in this class?" This was the question that was going through my mind. As I looked around at some of my classmates, I couldn't help but smile and so to myself, "My classmates are all young." After I realized that, I got my phone and sent a message to my husband. I told him that all my classmates were young.

A couple of minutes passed and our professor was still nowhere in site. Most of the students were still quiet. You could almost hear a needle fall. There were a few that were whispering to each other as they talked. Some started using the computer to browse the Internet and compose e-mails. Mostly, we were waiting for our instructor. I looked around some more and told my seatmate that it had been a couple of minutes and our professor was still missing. Would he even attend class? My classmate replied, " I think that's him over there," pointing towards the person close to the doorway. I looked at the guy and was thinking "If he is the instructor, why is he not doing anything? He is just there, waiting."

After about 10 minutes of waiting, the guy that my classmate told me was our professor stood up. He started talking and asking questions about different types of learning. That's when it hit me; I am in for a roller coaster ride.

Home Schooling: Is It The Right Choice?

Home schooling is the education of the children at home, typically by parents or guardian, rather than in a public or private schools. It is an option for parents who wish to provide their children with a different learning environment that exists in public schools. It is also an alternative for those families who are unable, for practical or personal reasons, to comply with regulations of a public or private schools.

The concept of home school is based on personalized teaching for inculcating greater efficiency in a child. The efficiency is successfully proved by many children who are being taught at home schools and has shown enormous skills and knowledge compared to the children taught at public schools. While exact numbers are hard to come by, recent estimates by the US Department of Education place the home schooled population at more than one million, or about two percent of the school age population.

An increasing number of parents are deciding that home schooling is the best option for their children. They are unhappy with the quality of education offered at the schools or have other reasons why they feel that traditional schools are not suitable for their children. One reason is concern about the quality of schools available. Public schools are often under funded and staffed by teachers without sufficient knowledge of what they are teaching. Other parents may disagree with the aims for the school curriculum, social or cultural reasons to keep their children separate.

There are also negative effects for home school children. One of which is deficiency in social interaction. In a home school, the child or children is taught in a secluded atmosphere of a home, which hinders his or her social development. The child grows up without learning how to interact with other people in the society. Social communication is an important part of any individual’s life and childhood is the building stage of it. Another negative effect is time constrictions. In a home school, the parents have to teach their child various subjects per requirements. Parents have to postpone or leave their work to teach the child fully. The parents have to be with the child throughout his or her lessons and they have to spend more time correcting worksheets or making visuals. Money matters are also another negative effect for doing home school. At first, it will look like your saving money because you don’t have to pay any tuition fees unlike if your child is enrolled in a private school or miscellaneous fees if you are in a public school. However, since one the partner has to stay at home to teach the child, families will be relying on one income which can be hard most of the time not unless you are earning a huge amount of money. But if you are doing home school and your income is just an average income, budget will be tight. To sum it up the most significant disadvantage is the amount of sacrifice it takes physically, emotionally and financially. Time is needed to prepare and teach each lesson, organize outside activities and field trips and schedule opportunities for the home schooled child to nurture his friendship and develop his interest. Homeschooling parents do not have the luxury of having time for themselves while their children are at school

Another issue is that the child will not be sufficiently prepared for further education. Many parents prefer to home school their child through high school, but then want them to go to a traditional college or universities. However, children that are not used to classroom setting sometimes have trouble adjusting to college life. Parents may not be as strict as the teacher.
The next thing that needs to be considered is the distraction factor. If a child is schooled at home, the result can be that the child does not take their studies seriously, especially when their parents are their teacher. This behavior could result in poor grade. Parents are not well equipped as a teacher. You should consider how well equipped you are to teach your children.
There are many arguments in favor of sending children to conventional schools. The first is that the children will be exposed to other children which will help them to develop social skills. A second point is that the children will learn to function outside the family. They will not be dependent on their parents for their educational, emotional and social needs. A third point is that the children will find it easier to integrate when they finish school and start venturing out.
While many parents work hard to teach their children at home, regular schools are still the right choice for most children. Schools are not perfect, but it is a proven way of preparing our children for the real world.
And certainly, home schooling is not for me.
